What Integrity Really Means Sandy Kruse 1:32 Hi everyone, welcome to Sandy K Nutrition Health and Lifestyle Queen. Today I'm going to talk about something that I have actually spoken a lot about over the last couple of years.
And this podcast is going to be all about integrity, what character is, and true character, and can we build it or rebuild it? Why it might be eroding? And I have alluded to this exact topic for at least the last couple of years. And one of the reasons why I have chosen to go more solo episodes is because I've been around since I've seen the world of wellness really take a shift in how topics are presented to you as a listener.
You might be in the health and wellness space, you might not. I'm going to be talking about what true character is. I'm going to use a lot of research. I'm also going to talk about integrity.
And the reason why I felt I would take this topic on is because I've seen a lack of it in this space. I have been in this space for over nine years now. I started Sandy K Nutrition back when I was a college student with the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. I am a holistic nutritionist, a registered holistic nutritionist with multiple certifications.
Now, let me just kind of briefly say what my training is because I think it's important. Because being credentialed while it doesn't mean I'm an expert in you, and that's one of the big issues with the wellness space, is nobody is an expert in you. And if somebody is kind of selling you this tale that you need them to be healthy and well because they're experts, then I would really go back and kind of do the internal work and understand what discernment is. This kind of came up a lot within me back during the pandemic, where I really saw it was almost like it was this split of people who could either really analyze and think for themselves, whereas there were people who were being told this is the way it is, and it's the way it is for everyone.
So I'm gonna pause there because this is one of my biggest things is that we are not robots. Science and research cannot explain what is right or wrong for everyone on the planet. This is why my platform is all about science and soul. And in a lot of my training as a registered holistic nutritionist, I've always been a very spiritual person.
But in a lot of the training, we talk about both science. I did do pathology, symptomatology, biology, all of the science, but I also studied the soul and what it means to be whole and human. That's why everything I do is science and soul. So with that, I am gonna go on with my topic, but I always I just want you to know that I work hard to bring this to you, but I don't work hard to bring any of my topics to you with the purpose of selling a coupon code.
It's not who I am. While I may have affiliations, I'm very careful and selective, and I'm also very transparent about these affiliations. And that, my friends, is what leads me to today's topic. So before I go on, please hit subscribe or follow wherever you're listening or watching, because that helps independent, honest, unbiased, my only bias is me, uh, podcasts come to light so that more people can find me.
Also, you can find me most active on Instagram, everything everywhere you're gonna find me, Sandy Knutrition, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, wherever you do your social media threads, everywhere. Okay, so now let's get into it. The Cheating Researchers Irony Sandy Kruse 6:23 Let me start with one of the most dammy, damning facts that I found. It appears the two most famous honesty researchers alive faked their data on honesty.
So these were honesty researchers who were doing research, and it was shown to be. Well, this is what I have researched and found. Okay, this is also why I say research can't be everything. Dan Early, who wrote the best seller on why we lie, uh, Francesca Gino, the Harvard Business School Ethics Professor, whose whole career was the science of cheating.
In 2012, they published a landmark study. Sign an honesty pledge at the top of a form instead of at the bottom, and people lie less. Governments tested it, corporations rebuilt their paperwork around it. It got cited over 400 times.
Well, my friends, it was apparently fabricated. A group of data detectives took the actual spreadsheets apart and found the numbers were faked and the paper was retracted. And in May of 2025, Harvard revoked Gino's tenure. The first time that university is known to have done that since the 1940s.
She denies it and she's suing. But sit in the irony, either way, and that's why I was kind of excited to talk about this at the start of my podcast. The experts on integrity seemingly didn't have it themselves. The people who studied cheating for a living were allegedly the cheaters.
Like, wow. Okay. So if the people who devoted their entire lives to this can perform integrity in public and abandon it behind the scenes in a research study, then this thing we call integrity is far more fragile and complicated than we realize. And we are now living in the first moment in human history where a machine will do the lying for you so your hands never have to get dirty.
So today, what character actually is, how character differs from integrity because they're not the same, whether you can be handed bad character in childhood, and whether you can rebuild it, why there's measurably less of this strong character of it right now, what weakened character actually looks like clearly, so you can spot it. And then the part that matters the most, how you can turn that mirror around to yourself and how you can build character from wherever you're standing, no matter what your childhood may have handed you. So, my friends, science and soul, let's go. Character Vs Integrity Defined Sandy Kruse 10:07 Let me clear this up first because I've heard these used interchangeably my whole life, and they're not the same.
I'm gonna define them. Character is the whole of who you are morally, the full set of your dispositions, your entire moral operating system. It's the sum. Integrity is one specific piece inside it.
It's the load-bearing one. The word comes from Latin integer, a whole number, undivided, complete, the same root as integrate. Integrity means wholeness. It means the person you are in private is the same person you are in public.
It means your words and your actions are the same object, not a performance stapled over a secret. So here's why that distinction matters. You can have real courage in your character and still have no integrity because you're fractured. Brave in one room, a coward in another.
Look at social media. Like, you know, how many people can you actually tell who they are? Because they're using AI, they're using people who do all of their posting for them. So it's like they're building a person on this social media space for you.
Okay. So integrity is the beam that holds every other virtue up. Without it, everything else is just good performance. Character is the house, and integrity is whether the house is structurally sound or just maybe nice looking on the front, which is what I'm talking about on social media.
This, this stuff is actually baked into my birth chart and my bones. And this is always where I bring in the soul. I'm actually a Capricorn stellium. For those of you who like astrology, you know I like it.
I don't live my life by it, but I do like it. But I look at my whole chart. So that means that, like as a Capricorn stellium, it means naturally that I it's like inherent in me that I watch whether your actions match your words, whether you're whole, whether you're bullshit. That's the only integrity test that has ever mattered.
Do the words and the actions line up over time? Listen, not everybody's perfect. I'm talking about patterns. The dichotomy is that I'm also a cancer rising or ascendant.
So I always give many chances to the people I love, no matter what. It's like I'm this mechanical intellectual one side, and then this big giant heart on the other. So this is what I live with. And you know, it's it's not always easy to live this way because they're complete polar opposites.
Childhood Templates And Rewriting The Code Sandy Kruse 13:36 So, can you be handed bad character and can you rebuild it? Yes to both of these questions. And this is the most important thing I'm gonna say. Well, maybe not, but it's a very important part of this podcast.
Nobody's born with character, and nobody is perfect, and we all make mistakes. Aristotle named this 23 centuries ago, and modern neuroscience only confirms it. You are not born honest or brave or whole, you become those things by doing them over and over until they settle into who you are. Character is not instilled at birth, it's built by repetition.
Okay. Of course, there's going to be some things, some traits that are inherited by your parents through genetics. And then there's somebody like me who will always look at everything holistically, like, for example, my birth chart. What is really important is to say your first draft actually gets written by the people who raise you.
So if you grew up around someone who talked a big game, did the opposite, a parent, a father figure, whoever it was, with all the promises, maybe a lot of BS, maybe they drank a lot, maybe you didn't even know who they were. And maybe it's because it was cloudy. Um, maybe their words evaporated the second they left their mouth. So you did not just witness that, you absorbed it, you downloaded it as the template for what normal looks like.
And that's not your fault. You're a child running the software that you were handed. But here's the whole point: it's a first draft, not a life sentence. Because if character is built, it can be rebuilt.
The template that you were given can be overwritten by what you choose now. Your childhood loaded the software, but you can rewrite the code. This is the same neuroplasticity that I've talked about on the show through the nervous system and the default mode network. Remember the DMN.
I've talked about this in my episode on neural nets. The pathways worn one way, so you're, you know, you know, you're paving that road, it can be worn another way, and nothing about you is finished. And it's your choice to always be evolving and growing in this world, which is what I love. That's the stuff that excites me every day.
And if low integrity is one in the story that's, you know, in you, if you've lied, you've broken promises, done genuinely shitty things, the same news applies to you. You are not your worst chapter. Character is a running total, and you can start making deposits today. AI And The Rise Of Cheating Sandy Kruse 17:02 Now, let's get into why there might be less of this now and what AI actually is.
So, this is the machine part. And I want to be precise here because a lazy version of this is just technology is bad, but you deserve better than this explanation, and I know you want it because this is something that I find interesting. In September of 2025, the journal Nature published a study, and it was titled Delegation to Artificial Intelligence Can Increase Dishonest Behavior. What they found is both simple and it's disturbing.
When people had to cheat with their own heads, most stayed honest. But the moment they could hand the task to an AI who could just set the goal, let the machine do it, the cheating shot up. It went up the most when they could stay vague, when they never had to type the dishonest words out loud. The lie lived in the gap between what they wanted and what they never had to say.
Now why? So a psychologist named Albert Bandura named it decades ago. It's called moral disengagement. We all want to see ourselves as good.
So when we do something wrong, the mind builds escape hatches. So we use soft language, so it doesn't sound really that bad or like what it is. We tell ourselves, everyone does it, AI is the most powerful moral disengagement machine ever built because it gives you perfect distance. You didn't lie, you asked the tool to optimize, your hands stayed clean.
There you go. Now here's the part you need to hear because it's the real answer to whether AI has integrity, it doesn't have any, not good, not bad. The machine has no character of its own, it borrows yours. It is exactly as honest as the hand that holds it.
It is the mirror. Except it's worse than a mirror. In the same nature study, when people gave the AI a flat out, dishonest instruction, the machine complied at higher rates than human accomplices did. Ask a real person to lie for you, and a lot of them will flinch.
There'll be a little bit of a uncomfortable. So in a low integrity hand, AI isn't just as bad as its user, it's worse because it removes the last human break. The accomplice who would have looked at you and said, No, your character used to get checked by other people's. That it will never ever stop you.
So, and there's ways to do that, right? Like, you know how I actually I actually recorded a podcast, can AI save a marriage? And the answer is no. It can help with communication and go listen to that podcast.
I think you'll like it. So AI is very, very interesting, but the bottom line is whoever's using it is what matters, right? Wellness Marketing And Trust On Social Sandy Kruse 21:04 So now I'm going to get into this whole coupon code Cure integrity and health and wellness. Because this is this is really my deepest domain.
And this is why I went off on my own. I started to record podcasts. I say they're unbiased. They they have my opinion and my choice on what research I'm using, but I don't sell you.
Well, in most cases, I'm not giving you a coupon code in the end. And most people who follow me know I do not do that often. And it's only if I really believe in the product. So let's get into this piece.
Now, let me bring every piece of this home into my own house, the health and wellness world, where I have lived and worked as a registered holistic nutritionist since 2019 in the wellness space, though, for over nine years. I started Sandy K Nutrition while I was still in. Nutrition student, because this is where the collapse of integrity stops being philosophy and starts costing people their health, their money, and their trust in their own bodies. I'm going to give you a few caveats here, but I'll keep going.
So when I started my podcast six and a half years ago, back in 2020, February 2020, a month before the pandemic, the use my code economy barely existed at the scale that you see today. Watch what has happened since, or listen to what's happened since. The global influencer marketing industry was worth somewhere around $9.5 billion in 2020. By 2025, it had hit roughly 32 and a half billion and has kept climbing, more than tripling over the very years I've been standing here or sitting here doing this.
In 2020, about 64% of US marketers used influencer marketing. By 2025, it was around 86%. Goldman Sachs values the entire creator economy at close to half a trillion dollars by 2027. That is the machine that now stands between you and almost every health decision you make.
And it grew up in the exact window that I've been standing here doing this. And it has quietly replaced the doctor. Pew Research, PEW research, found that about four in 10 American adults and half of everyone under 50 now get health information from social media and podcasts. A survey of 2,000 Americans found that nearly one in five now trust health influencers more than the actual medical professionals in their own community.
Half of Americans have bought a health product after seeing it advertised on social media. So who are these new ever-so-trusted authorities? Because that's the important piece here. One thing I'm going to say, first of all, is they don't know who you are, who's buying it.
They have no idea who you are. That's an important point. So who are they? Pew looked at nearly 7,000 health and wellness influencers with over a hundred thousand followers each, and only about four in ten listed any health professional background at all.
A third call themselves coaches without any true, real, concrete credentials. Three in ten call themselves entrepreneurs. One in ten just cite their own life experience. Listen, wisdom is powerful.
Don't get me wrong. But how much power are you giving these people? This is what is crazy to me. However, you know, I say that, but we've all done it.
We're like, oh wow, this person has 100,000 followers and they're selling this supplement that's saying you're gonna live to 100. Damn, I better buy that up. People, we must get wiser. Now, here's what they're actually feeding you.
One 2024 analysis of nutrition content found that just 2.1% of it lined up with established public health guidance. I take public health with a grain of salt. So take this comment that I'm making with a grain of salt. Because public health, at least in Canada, is not always caught up to what up-and-coming research is out there.
That's something I am gonna absolutely point out. When researchers examined more than 100 supplements promoted by influencers, remember these influencers, who they are, they found roughly two-thirds of the recommended doses exceeded national safety limits, with some blowing past the upper safe limits entirely. So people are being pushed past safe dosing by people who mostly are not even qualified and buying it because a discount code made them feel like it's a bargain and a cure at the same time. A 2025 study found that over 80% of wellness influencers failed to disclose advertising or conflicts of interest in their content or anything whatsoever that they might say.
Hey, you know, maybe they should say something like, Hey, check this out, but this might not be for you. Check with your own health practitioner. Some people say that, most don't. I am hearing fashion influencers talk about NAD.
Like, we're listening you can say uh like, and then this goes this really teeters between you know censorship and freedom of speech, and I'm not gonna get into that, but guess what it all boils down to? It all boils down to you. You the change starts with you, the power starts with you, everything begins with you. We as a society have given too much power to wellness influencers, and I have changed, I have very few companies I'm affiliated with.
I do have some uh people who I do affiliate myself with, but it's because a I like the product, or B, because the product has been shown to be really effective. So everything that I'm talking about here really the end boils down to you. It's not the code that's the enemy. A discount code is simply a tool, like every tool in this episode or any podcast, it takes the integrity of the hand that holds it.
That's the reality. There's a clean line, and it's not complicated. The Three Rules For Discount Codes Sandy Kruse 29:03 Who's holding that discount code? Integrity is the internal version of that rule, and it comes down to three things.
You disclose it, you don't hide that it's an ad, you actually use the thing that you're talking about, or you believe in it, and you never ever dress it up as a cure for something it cannot cure. A code used inside those three lines is more of an honest communication. A code used outside of them, it's really a fracture and it's aimed at vulnerable people who are looking to improve their health. And you know, if somebody's selling you a discount code, let's say, okay, here's a lip balm, okay?
It's probably not gonna hurt most people, 99% of people, unless you're allergic to the ingredients. Um, it's not gonna do a lot of harm, it doesn't cost a lot of money. Uh you know, I'm gonna give you a code that's gonna save you 10%. Pretty harmless, right?
However, if somebody's selling you a very expensive longevity supplement, you're not really sure how that's going to interact with you, your physiology, and the person on the other end has 100,000 followers and is going to make hundreds of thousands of dollars on selling that coupon code to you. You need to be wiser to that. And you need to have somebody who actually knows you and your physiology and your history and your health to say that might be a good option for you. Go ahead and use that coupon code.
So I've kind of talked about this a lot, but it's just a really important piece because I want everybody to kind of go back to a hybrid as it relates to their themselves and their own health, where it's good, it's it's great to be wise and and read about and research things and go, oh, you know, I love this. Like I researched the blue zones. And then I heard that that some of that might be bullshit too. But anyway, research it, and then everything that I speak about, and some of the affiliations that I have, they talk about bringing the power back to you, where you learn discernment and push back on some of the stuff that's being pushed at you.
Now let's get back to what a weekend, because that was a pretty big, you know, sidebar there, but it's a really important one because it addresses the integrity in the space of health and wellness, where it's gone, where it's at now, and what you can do. And I will say my podcast is free. And this year especially, I focused a lot of my topics on bringing that power back to you. So you might even listen to one episode and go, holy crap, that saved my life, and then never listen any again.
Let's say I'm not selling you a story to say, in order for you to be healthy, you need to follow me and listen to me. No, you don't. If you resonate with my stuff, great. Wonderful.
That's what I'm here for. Clear Signs Of Weak Character Sandy Kruse 32:42 Okay, so let's talk about what a weekend character actually looks like because this is important. The first sign, the words do not match the actions, and it's about a trend. Everybody says, I'll be there at nine, you show up at 9:30.
Some people just have that in them where they're late all the time. It's not great. Doesn't necessarily mean they're like that in their whole life. Look at the actions as a pattern throughout their life.
This is the whole game. Not talking about that one broken promise. It's the pattern. A person of integrity's words and actions are the same thing.
Pretty darn close. A fractured person's words are a press release. And listen for the language that shows up to cover the gap. Everybody does it, it's just business, it's not a big deal.
That's not explanation, that's the sound of someone talking themselves out of their own conscience. So the second sign, number two, they're one person in public and another in private. The real test of character is who you are when there's no audience. So those people I talked about at the very start are Erily and Gino, they stood on stages lecturing the world on honesty while allegedly, okay, this is allegedly faking the data backstage.
Watch the gap between someone's highlight reel and their behind the scenes. That gap is the exact size of the fracture. There was a person that I got to know in this wellness space, and I just never, again, here's me not listening to my gut. I've come a long way, my friends.
But they appeared one way at conferences, on their social media, you know, in certain settings. And then when they got on the phone with me, they were not like that. Let's just say, not like that. That kindness, the softness, the smile, that was not there.
They were being real with me, and it didn't match that public persona. So let's get into the third sign. They've stopped doing their own thinking and their own choosing. Okay, so this is weakened character.
I'm still what it looks like. Handing off a task is fine. That's just a tool. Handing off your judgment is not.
When someone can't sit in a hard decision anymore, when they outsource every uncomfortable call to someone or something else, so they never have to own the outcome. The muscle is dying. There's even early MIT research calling it cognitive debt. Outsourcing your thinking long enough, and you start to lose ownership of it.
Character requires you to stay the author of your choices. Power Reveals The Outward Face Sandy Kruse 36:15 The other face of integrity, how you treat the people who trusted you. There's a second half of this, and it's the one that actually can ruin somebody's life. Everything so far has been integrity turned inward.
Am I whole? Do my words match my actions? But integrity has an outward face. And it's this do you know the right thing to do by other people?
And do you actually do it? Especially when you hold power over someone who doesn't have that power. Here's the truest test of a person's character. You never learn who someone is by how they treat the people who can hurt them back.
You learn it by how they treat the people who can't. People in the weakest position. I mean, there was a whole thing about this, right? In the past news.
And here's the hardest thing: some people are simply crooked. Those are the facts. Everything I told you about rebuilding character is for people who want to be whole. It's for people who want to be better, people who want more peace, people who want kindness, people who want goodness in their life, people who see themselves, who can feel that little flinch and are trying to answer it.
Like, why do I do that? It does nothing for the for the person who feels no flinch at all, who is never once conflicted about what they did, what they said, whose compass has only ever pointed at their own advantage and always will. You cannot integrity coach that person, you cannot force them into a conscience that they simply do not have. And you'll know one by what they do the moment you confront them.
A DARVO And Why You Walk Away Sandy Kruse 38:35 psychologist named, and I've named her in my podcast, a psychologist named Jennifer Freyd gave this a name, Darvo. Deny, attack, reverse victim, and defender. They deny it happened, they attack you for daring to raise it. And within seconds, sometimes, somehow, they're the wounded party, and you're the villain for noticing it.
When you see that movie, stop explaining yourself. You're not talking to somebody who lost their way, you're talking to somebody who was never on the road. Turn around and take the other way. Don't even engage.
Now, turn the mirror around, my friends. The Mirror Exercise For Self Honesty Sandy Kruse 39:26 Okay. The work isn't really spotting it out there, it's spotting it in here, in your heart and in your soul. So actually, I want you to do this with me.
Okay. It's a little exercise. Sit with these honestly and don't perform the answers. You're gonna love this.
Where do my words and my actions not match right now? Name one, just do one for now. This is a great exercise. What have I done that I dressed up in soft language so I wouldn't have to feel that flinch?
Okay. Who am I when absolutely no one is watching? And is this that same person I present to the world? Give or take, okay?
Take this with a grain of salt. If you're in a public space, social media, and people expect authenticity, well, you can't possibly show your entire self to everyone. However, often what happens, and this is something to really pause and think about people who are in that public space who have a hundred thousand followers, how much of it is them, and how much is fabricated by AI, and how much of it is somebody doing all of their social media work for them? Okay where am I handing off a choice I know in my gut that I should be owning myself?
Okay, where am I forgiving in someone else what I would never forgive in myself or punishing in myself what I'd instantly forgive in someone I love? This is probably one of my the most important ones. This, my friends, is the self-abandonment piece, and I've recorded a great podcast on this as well. We do this for the people we love.
So wherever you land in these questions, even if it's ugly, especially if it's ugly, that's not a verdict on you. It's a starting line because you're willing to look at it. So, how to build from wherever you're standing. No matter what your childhood handed you, we cannot blame our childhood.
That might be one of my biggest pet peeves. People who just, unless you come from a very, very serious, traumatic, abusive, listen, there's always going to be, you know, circumstances that are extreme. However, I look at my dad, his are pretty extreme. And I've talked about my dad.
My dad, very poor Croatian farmer, born, uh, he would have been the fourth brother of a very poor farmer, and his mother died giving birth to him. That's that's where his story started. He turned his life around entirely. So, no matter what your child handed, childhood handed you, no matter how you just scored in the mirror on that exercise I just gave you.
Here's how you actually rebuild. Daily Reps To Rebuild Character Sandy Kruse 43:06 Because character is a muscle and you train it like one. Small reps done daily, especially when no one is watching. And remember, this is not any kind of therapy advice.
If you see a therapist, listen to your therapist. I am just giving you breadcrumbs for people who just want to do better, especially for themselves as well as for the people they love. Number one, keep the small promises. The tiny ones, nobody would even notice that you dropped.
You said you'd call. You said nine o'clock, be there at nine o'clock. Tell the free truth, the low stakes truth, where lying would cost you nothing and no one would ever even find out. Take the truth anyway.
Every single one is. Is a deposit. Do one hard thing yourself before you reach for the AI and the machine. Keep the friction on purpose.
The struggle was never the obstacle, the struggle is the workout. That's where the whole self gets built. Close your gap first. Before you go clocking everyone else's word, action gap.
Find one of your own this week and fix it. Say the thing that you've been avoiding. Do the thing that you promised. Take accountability.
Say you're sorry. Own your fucking shit, my friends. Feel the flinch and don't numb it. That little I don't want to be a person who does this.
That's not weakness. That's your character waking up. Most people spend their lives learning to silence it. Your job is to turn the volume back up.
And if you've got problems where, you know, this is not any kind of judgment, but if you're drinking a lot, if you're using any kind of substances to numb, that could be a problem for you. See somebody for that. Watch your patterns. Forgiveness is beautiful, but self-abandonment dressed up as forgiveness is not.
Sometimes the highest integrity thing you can do is to stop handing chances to someone whose actions never once match their words. Protecting your own wholeness is not cruelty, it's integrity aimed for once at your beautiful, beautiful self. I want to close this off now. Final Takeaways And How To Support Sandy Kruse 45:51 This has been a very powerful podcast for me to record because I have been speaking about integrity for so long in this space, and something hadn't felt right for a very long time.
I speak of integrity a lot on my platform. And no, I'm not perfect, but I work really hard to be the best I can be, and I'm always improving, and I always do the internal work and the reflection and all of that because that makes me a better person. It makes me a better person to myself, and it makes me a better person for all the people who I care about and I bring into my circle. I've talked about so much of this, especially in the last year.

Always sandy at sandyknutrition.ca. So the lesson here is that character is not a credential you earn once, and you know, it's a this award that sits on a shelf. It's a living thing that you either feed it or you starve it every single day. In the moments so small that you swear they don't even count, but they all count.
These little things in this strange new age where a machine will happily do your thinking, your lying, and all you're becoming for you. The most radical thing you can do is stay the author of your own soul. Be the one whole thing in a world offering you a thousand easy ways to quietly split in two. So it begins with you, not a guru, not a tool, not an expert on stage, you and the next small unwitnessed choice that you're about to make.
That choice is your character and build it like it matters. I appreciate you so, so much for coming and listening each and every week. See you next week. I hope you enjoyed this episode.
